Mental Health of Journalists in Exile: Facing Multiple Crises Simultaneously
Tuesday October 8, 2024 14:00 - 14:50 CEST
In the last few years, many journalists and editorial offices have been forced to move out of Russia and Belarus due to repressive actions and government censorship. Journalists forced to leave their countries and move elsewhere are currently facing multiple crises at the same time: burnout, despair, inability to change the situation, cancel culture, isolation from colleagues (as many teams are distributed), crises of emigration, and difficulties in integrating into societies in new countries, etc.

Our team of psychologists based in Lithuania has worked with journalists in exile for over 1.5 years, providing individual sessions, support groups, training, and mental health surveys. We’d like to share our experience and observations and hear the opinions of our colleagues facing the same issues.

Narratives of Change and Coping Among TV Reporters Covering the War on Drugs
Tuesday October 8, 2024 14:00 - 14:50 CEST
The Philippines braced for "change" in 2016 when the "war on drugs” began. The mental health impact of this “war” was among the things that journalists did not see coming.  Using the constructivist narrative perspective, the study explored stories of stress and coping of six television crime reporters covering the war on drugs. Data was gathered through individual in-depth interviews, and was analyzed using McAdams' context of discovery.

Does Constructive Journalism Protect Us from Burnout and Depression?
Tuesday October 8, 2024 14:00 - 14:50 CEST
Reporting on crises and wars can be depressing - not only for the audience, but also for the media makers themselves. Constructive Journalism promises a way out. Instead of simply naming problems, it focuses on solutions. Instead of polarizing, it wants to show different perspectives and enable constructive dialogue. How does that effect the mental health of media makers? Let’s discuss it!

The Challenges and Importance of Boundaries in Dealing with Vulnerable Sources in Journalism
Tuesday October 8, 2024 14:00 - 14:50 CEST
In ethical journalism, empathy and a responsible approach to sources are of great importance. But what does that mean?

Friederike Engst, Psychological Psychotherapist and Trainer at DART Center Europe and Helpline Germany and Tabea Grzeszyk repeatedly face questions addressing professional distance, doubts, and uncertainty in their respective roles. We want to discuss examples and the individual challenges of working with vulnerable protagonists (e.g., moral injury, vicarious trauma, feelings of guilt), the importance of boundaries—including one’s own—and the circumstances under which they might blur. We will talk about how to create a safe environment and minimize the risk of causing additional harm.

Mitigating Against Vicarious Trauma
Tuesday October 8, 2024 15:00 - 15:50 CEST
Vicarious trauma is exposure to someone else’s trauma. Many journalists are exposed regularly to violent, distressing or graphic material in different forms of media - from videos to court reports, researching abuses, to hearing accounts from survivors of trauma.

One year on* from the start of the Israel-Gaza war, Headlines Network will explore how vicarious trauma has become a threat to newsrooms.

In this session, we will share individual experiences and insights, helping our colleagues recognise how to mitigate secondary trauma, and look after themselves and others if they are exposed.

Hannah Storm and John Crowley from Headlines Network have published a resource guide on vicarious trauma and will draw from this during this workshop.

Online Abuse Self-Defense: Don’t Forget Psychosocial Support
Tuesday October 8, 2024 15:00 - 15:50 CEST
Online abuse is a pervasive and growing problem in the journalism industry, causing self-censorship and psychological damage. Yet few journalists receive training on how to defend themselves against online abuse. Even digital security training, while offering critical guidance on protecting sensitive accounts or evading surveillance, rarely addresses the psychosocial aspects of self-defense.

In this workshop, we’ll create a safe space for journalists and their allies to exchange practical strategies for navigating online abuse, with an emphasis on psychosocial support. We’ll discuss self-care, allyship, strategies for talking to friends, family, and employers, accessing clinical support, and psychological first aid.

Reporting Responsibly on Campus Suicide: Student Experiences Reporting on Suicide on University Campuses
Tuesday October 8, 2024 16:00 - 16:50 CEST
This case study will explore student editors’ experiences reporting on four suicides during one year at The Stanford Daily, culminating in the death of Stanford student and athlete Katie Meyer, which made national headlines and caused a reckoning with mental health on campus.

Additionally, this session will introduce Reporting Responsibly on Campus Suicide (RROCS) as a unique new tool designed specifically for student journalists covering suicide. Suicide is a leading cause of death among college students. On college campuses, student newspapers often find themselves at the center of such crises, and student journalists play a key role in covering mental health on campus.

This session will include Tammer Bagdasarian, a co-founder of RROCS and student journalist.

Trauma-Aware Journalism: A News Industry Toolkit
Tuesday October 8, 2024 16:00 - 16:50 CEST
Journalists require healthy, ethical and trauma-aware approaches to their work.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the Dart Center for Journalism & Trauma, and the Canadian Journalism Forum on Violence & Trauma together will present an interactive case study that will introduce a new suite of online resources designed to better prepare newsrooms, reporters and journalism school educators for coverage of violence, conflict and tragedy. The toolkit provides news professionals with a host of self-care resources, alongside practical approaches to ethical engagement with victims and survivors of traumatic experiences.

Case study presenters Dave Seglins (CBC), Jane Hawkes (Canadian Forum) and Ariel Ritchin (Dart Center) bring with them decades of experience leading newsroom training, teaching journalism school courses, producing their own original reporting and advocating for the mental health of journalists all over the world.

Mental Health in African Newsrooms: Experiences and Learnings from Women in Media
Tuesday October 8, 2024 16:00 - 16:50 CEST
Five African women in the media open up and share their individual - and yet common - mental health challenges, having worked for decades in newsrooms, a highly stressful and demanding professional environment. How have they dealt with some of the stressors specifically affecting the journalistic profession, such as hyperconnectivity, being available 24/7, limited recognition, attacks against the media, low pay, sexual harassment, online abuse or exposure to traumatic content? What have they learned along the way? Which strategies and tactics are they applying for themselves and their teams to make journalism a healthier profession?

Aprendiendo a decir no
Tuesday October 8, 2024 19:30 - 20:20 CEST

Assume the Best: How a New Theory of Humanity Is Changing How We Report, Respond, and Run Newsrooms
Wednesday October 9, 2024 13:30 - 14:00 CEST
Humans are inherently selfish and prone to violence. We need governments, armies and police to maintain order. But those institutions are also corrupt and self-serving. Children are born naughty and are lazy at school unless teachers take a hard line. When they enter the workforce, their managers expect the same. Those are the assumptions that are baked into our societies and perpetuated by hard-nosed journalists. But what if those assumptions are wrong? If we really want to be unbiased as journalists, we need to balance our powerful negativity bias with a dose of positivity. That should make for more hopeful stories, healthier journalists and happier newsrooms and audiences.

Rethinking Journalists’ Mental Well-Being in Italy, Greece, and Portugal
Wednesday October 9, 2024 14:00 - 14:50 CEST
Journalists’ mental well-being is crucial for good journalism. But in some Southern European countries, this topic is still a taboo. The solutions aren’t straightforward, since every person deals with well-being differently, and the problems touch on systemic issues in the profession, such as precariousness and low incomes, which also need to be tackled for long-lasting well-being.

What are the main challenges that journalists’ mental health faces? What is being done already to solve them, and what is possible beyond existing solutions? We will find out more about three projects in Italy, Greece, and Portugal.

Reorganizing Communication Tools to Reduce Stress Among Teams
Wednesday October 9, 2024 16:00 - 16:50 CEST
In recent years, AFP has used a variety of communication tools across different regions, departments, and individual preferences. This has led to a proliferation of tools, making internal communication complex. For instance, it was challenging to determine the appropriate channel for contacting someone, causing inefficiency and uncertainty about message reception. Employees also had to monitor multiple tools, leading to increased stress. To address these issues, AFP has decided to streamline and simplify its communication methods.

Journalism’s Open Secret: When Alcohol Use Turns into Abuse
Wednesday October 9, 2024 16:00 - 16:50 CEST
Alcohol has long been ubiquitous in journalism culture: From movies where editors toast a big scoop to happy hours to the late-night crew hustling over to catch last call after a long night. But the line between use and abuse can quickly blur, especially for individuals with high-pressure, high-stakes, trauma-exposed jobs like journalists.

This panel discussion will feature substance abuse experts and psychologists who can help the audience identify patterns that indicate substance abuse, alcohol’s long-term effects on mental health, productive ways to cope with trigger points and stress, and where to find assistance. NPCJI Executive Director Beth Francesco would moderate this conversation in which participants could ask questions anonymously.

We will explore why it is important to assess these and provide applied examples of practice. We will then discuss real-life examples of how we work as psychologists to support journalists, including working with contributors, dealing with potentially traumatic issues, and how reflection can be used as a support.

Key Takeaways for Psychologists to Offer Support to Journalists
Thursday October 10, 2024 15:00 - 15:50 CEST
The International Women’s Media Foundation provides holistic and identity-informed safety resources to journalists and newsrooms, including emergency assistance for journalists who have experienced traumatic events to access mental health services. We have seen the demand for therapy support increase significantly in the past years, including the need to increase the number of psychologists who understand the occupational hazards of being a journalist. The IWMF has partnered with Vinland Solutions with the support of UNESCO to develop an international manual to train psychologists specialized on post-traumatic stress to offer adequate and effective care to journalists. Join us for this workshop facilitated by the IWMF and led by Ana Zellhuber to hear the key takeaways to promote the well-being of journalists.

The Big Question: Why? Why Are We Doing This?
Thursday October 10, 2024 15:00 - 15:50 CEST
We know that most of the challenges in journalism can be endured as long as we know WHY we do it. What is our role in conflict and catastrophe zones? Where is our position between conflict parties, survivors, and helping organizations? How do we stick to reporting and deal with the urge to help and become activists? I will prepare a short input and discuss these questions with the people in the room.

Mental Health as a Collective: The Newsroom as the First Place of Support
Thursday October 10, 2024 16:00 - 16:50 CEST
In this case study session, we share and analyze the experience of the feminist digital media outlet "Alharaca" (El Salvador) and our collective approach to addressing mental health in the workplace. We will explore how we have created a culture of care among journalists and shifted towards viewing mental health care as a team issue, where the newsroom becomes a primary space for support and accompaniment when facing the emotional and psychological challenges posed by working in high-risk contexts with restrictions on freedom of expression, as is the case in El Salvador. We will also discuss strategies to fund this component and how we made it an integral part of our operations and budgets.

Lightning Talks
Thursday October 10, 2024 16:00 - 16:50 CEST

  1. Using Virtual Reality in Safety Training to Build Journalists' Mental Resilience in War Zones
    Katerina Sergatskova
This lightning talk is focused on mental health support for journalists working and living in war zones. You will learn how 2402 Foundation, a non-profit initiative launched in the first days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, provides essential mental health training and support to media professionals facing extreme stress and trauma. We build a safety culture and use technologies like AI and virtual reality to make the learning process more effective as the full-scale war demands innovative and sufficient solutions.
  2. Mental Disorder Stigmatization and Journalism
    Fira Abdurachman
This lightning talk presents findings from recent digital research published in a national accreditation journal, focusing on how journalists often use terms related to mental disorders to sensationalize unusual behavior. Instead of offering support, these portrayals create a parade of stigma. This session will explore how journalists can shift away from harmful stereotypes and promote more responsible, supportive coverage of mental health issues. For more details, access the research https://ejournal.uika-bogor.ac.id/index.php/Hearty/article/view
  3. Beyond the Headlines: Addressing the Mental Health Needs of Media Workers in Conflict Zones
    David Amiryan and Seda Muradyan
The Public Journalism Club's research on the 2020 war in Nagorno-Karabakh, followed by the forced deportation of 120,000 Armenians from the region in 2023, has highlighted the intense and multifaceted challenges faced by journalists operating in this conflict zone as well as when covering post-war developments. This session will shine a light on the unique and often underreported research findings of the obstacles they face for self-care or mental care activities. Expect practical recommendations tailored for media workers on strategies to safeguard their mental well-being in high-stress environments. In addition, there will be actionable suggestions for media managers on how to institutionalize mental health support and manage professional burnout within their organizations effectively.
  4. From Nigeria to Africa: Influencing Perceptions on Mental Health
    Gbenga Adekeye
In this lightning talk, we will explore how innovative Nigerian and African journalism is transforming perceptions of mental health across the continent. I will highlight impactful case studies to demonstrate how storytelling, social media campaigns, and anonymous platforms are breaking down stigma and fostering open discussions. The talk will also emphasize the importance of supporting journalists in their mental health journey, ensuring they can continue to be powerful advocates for change. Join us to discover the role of media in creating a more informed and empathetic society regarding mental health in Africa.
  5. The Additional Burden of Environmental Reporting: How to Handle It?
    Irene Baños Ruiz
Climate and environmental journalists face a daunting challenge: dealing with the emotional burden of reporting on a life threat with seemingly no remedy. As they navigate a relentless stream of catastrophic news, many experience frustration and exhaustion. Constant exposure to these distressing realities adds to precarious working conditions and dwindling public trust.
How to foster resilience among climate and environmental journalists, and ensure that those reporting on the planetary crisis can continue to inform and inspire action without compromising their own well-being?
  6. The Power of Owning Your Own Narrative
    Klaudia Lagozinski
Writing about your own mental health issues? About self-doubt, depression, medication, therapy & ADHD? Doing that, you put yourself in a vulnerable spot. Klaudia did it despite worries of being stigmatized or taken less seriously as a journalist and news desk manager. She realized: her doubts were unfounded. Instead, she had encouraging interactions afterwards, both with colleagues and readers. In this lightning talk she shares how she used her journalistic writing and research skills and introspection to create space for more discourse about mental health.
  7. Embracing the Hunter Mindset: 5 strategies for ADHD journalists
    Marguerite Meyer and Patrick Boehler
This lightning talk explores the hunter vs. farmer hypothesis of ADHD, which posits that ADHD traits were advantageous for hunters in ancient societies but may pose challenges in modern, "farmer"-oriented work environments. Speakers will discuss how journalists with ADHD can leverage their unique "hunter" strengths, such as hyperfocus, creativity, and adaptability, while navigating potential obstacles. Through personal anecdotes and practical tips, they will share their learnings and strategies for avoiding burnout, maintaining work-life balance, and harnessing the sprint-rest cycle for productivity.
  8. Organizational Actions to Support Journalists
    Valérie Bélair-Gagnon
This session will offer practical insights into how organizations can effectively support journalists, drawing from key takeaways in the Happiness in Journalism book. Explore actionable strategies and examples of how organizations can foster a supportive environment to enhance journalists' well-being and resilience.
